I love the poll included like the old days. My initial thought on this game is to wish again that we had seen this on the field last year as two Mr. Footballs traded highlights through the season but the teams never got to duke it out. Of course, a year removed, I think that my Hounds would have won that one, but who knows. We knew that we would be doing a small rebuild this season, and I hoped that we would be improving and that this test would show us where we are at. That’s exactly what I believe this is. Can a good O.S. defense slow down the Tide? Can we score enough to offset the usual second half offensive explosion? This should be a good one. More later.

should be a heck of a game.

for some reason this team this year has a bad habit of playing poorly the first half. very uncharacteristic.

if we play the way we can in the first half we are good enough to beat anybody and will so im picking the Tide but i dont know why im thinking things are going to change i just think they are gonna square it away.

on a side note: if our starting rb cant go again this week, it will likely be another tough one-  but this is not a region game - maybe they go ahead and hold him out to heal for region play. with a bye week next week it might be helpful to our long term goals. i guess we will see.

A lot of times, you’ll wind up looking at common opponents to try to gauge how you’ll fair against the opposing team.  Picayune and Ocean Springs have two common opponents in D’Iberville and Gulfport.  Picayune has already played both of those teams and grabbed victories.  Ocean Springs OTOH has yet to play them because district play hasn’t started yet.  I feel pretty comfortable about Ocean Springs beating D’Iberville, but the X-factor for me is how the Ocean Springs-Gulfport game plays out.  I feel like if you knew the outcome of that game, you would have a little bit more clarity in how this game could possibly play out.  It’s high school football, so anything could happen, but at least you might would have some more clarity.

You might have to go deeper to get comparisons. O.S. and Gulfport have a common opponent that beat them both by a hair, so they are close. Picayune and Gulfport are obviously pretty even. You might think that means next week’s game will be close, but it’s all about style in these games. O.S. relies more on defense, but can they matchup against the running style of the Tide? Injuries, of course, can Davis start, or will they hold him for district play? And, with that group of RBs, does it matter? O.S. has waited all year for the return of the highly touted soph RB to add speed to their offense. If he shows in this game, could tip the scales. Obviously, coaching matchups matter. Both teams have playoff type experience. Still a tossup in my book, or maybe I’m dreaming with the game up there.

I’ll be dipped.  Folks are voting on this poll.  Keep’em coming.  Voting stops at kickoff, so you’ve got plenty of time to vote.  Even if you have no rooting interest in either one of these teams, go ahead and make a selection.  If you feel like posting anything about why you made the selection that you did, feel free to share those thoughts as well.  I’m honestly curious to know how this game is going to go.

At least 4 to 6 weeks but they are not going to rush him back.

i hate to hear it.

that said this next game is about us getting better. otherwise it does not matter. its all about the playoffs and peaking in the playoffs.

i dont care about region titles either. they affect seeding but you can't sneak past the best teams you have to beat them to win a championship so its kind of irrelevant.

i am sure the Tide will give a good accounting of themselves whoever we put on the field. just keep improving - play the entire game. we will be fine.

I do not know if Ocean Springs has the fire power offensively to beat Picayune. I think it will be a really great game. I think Picayune wins in a 28-17 type of fashion.

Not having #6 in the backfield for the foreseeable future is definitely a loss, but it's not a detriment.  The backs that we have are more than capable of filling in the void there.  Maybe we'll have some addition by subtraction offensively and if that's the case we'll be just fine.

I agree with your statement. Hoping that this might be the best defense that the Tide has seen, but even with that, O.S. would need to put up 28 or so to have a shot. I haven’t seen that kind of firepower yet. Any chance Picayune spots us 21 or so like they’ve been doing?

If Picayune comes out flat and looks like they've never played a football game before, then yes we'll definitely spot Ocean Springs that 21 with ease.  However, if Picayune shows up to play and hits the gas pedal from the start I don't see it happening.  It's all going to depend on how Picayune attacks this game.

it's kind baffling what we have been seeing early this season.  This defense we have is really, really good. the best i have seen here in years. when they play they can stop anyone. we won that gulfport game in the 2nd half with a pick six and a sack on the last play when we needed it. we have been giving up easy touchdowns early in games and that is gonna half to stop. when it does, forget about it - we will shut everyone down.

I keep waiting on the Tide to play a complete game and I am hoping this game will be it this Friday night. If this team plays a complete game I don't see anybody hanging with us. As far as the running back position I honestly think #4 is a damn good athlete and is only going to get better and better the more he touches the ball.

Yeah this Defense is really good. We lost a few in the secondary. But the one in there are gonna learn how to cover better and become really  good. But like y'all have said when a complete game comes together in will be on. #4 is a great athlete and has gotten stronger also. He can play anywhere on  offense other than the line.

Ocean Springs has played a couple tough opponents in MC and NW Rankin. OS defense will be tested with a different animal this week no doubt but I think they're one of the best in the state and will get a chance to prove it. Offense is coming along and playing another tough opponent is great experience for an offense trying to find their identity. This will probably the best defense they've seen this season although MC and NW Rankin were both solid defensively as well. No matter the outcome, both teams will be better for playing this game for sure. Praying for both teams to stay healthy and get more great experience from another tough opponent!  I'm going with OS in a close one but I watched the two solid RB'S for Picayune bring them back against Gulfport and the QB is a dual threat as well, so I wouldn't be shocked either way.  Should be a great game.

Great analysis here, but based off of what you are saying, do you think that Ocean Springs beats Gulfport in a head to head matchup?  It's a district game so it will happen later in the season.  I'm also curious about you mentioning Ocean Springs' defense.  What makes their defense one of the best in the state in your opinion?

I think Gulfport and OS will be a close matchup and either team can win for sure. OS defense looks like the real deal to me at all 11 positions. They have proven themselves against tough teams the last two seasons and have basically all starters back from a great team last year. They have played tough this year against MC and NW Rankin. The other two games they dominated but obviously against inferior teams. Although Natchez did play tough against Vicksburg two weeks ago but they aren't on the level of a Picayune or OS for sure.

However, like I said, this will be the test to prove themselves for sure.
